“Everyone Deserves a Pocket”

November 22, 2011

Photographed in Austin, TX

Raised in:
East Hartford, Connecticut

Lives in:
Austin, Texas

What brought you down south:
Being down south, or Texas for that matter, is completely random for me. I was working as the marketing director for an experience based company on Martha’s Vineyard. Firefly Vodka was one of our clients so at the end of the season they offered me the opportunity to move down to Austin to help revamp their market share against a local competitor.

Now would ya look at that:
Since moving to Austin, he has also become the Marketing Director for Chuck & Jake, an Austin-based company founded by Chuck Freeman and Jake Hiller who have rethought the pocket. Founded in 2009, they set out to transform the traditional pocket tee to encompass the varied and youthful vibe of Austin, stating that “everyone deserves a pocket.” He is wearing their mossy green polo with a cream plaid pocket, part of the upcoming Winter 2011 collection. For any Texas fans who may be reading, check out their Game-Day Polo, it’s my personal favorite.

Wm. Lamb

Photographed in Atlanta, GA

Raised in:
Tallahassee, Florida

Lives in:
Tallahassee, Florida

Favorite thing about being an artist in the south:
Great subject matter from the piney red hills to the coastal marshes, how can you go wrong?

Now would ya look at that:
One of the highlights of the Social Primer Brooks Brothers Atlanta event was getting to chat with William Lamb. It was his Hunt Scene pants, designed from pieces of wallpaper from his grandparents farmhouse, that Cooper Ray of Social Primer saw and loved during the Southeastern Wildlife Expo in Charleston. The Hunt Scene fabric is now lining the limited edition Brooks Brothers Tailgate Blazer, Cooper’s newest collaboration with Brooks Brothers (if you haven’t seen his bow ties, take a look now). As for the rest of William’s good look above, a fifteen year old Brooks Brothers blazer along with a classic Brooks Brothers repp stripe bow tie.

Head over to the Facebook album to see a few more images from the event.

Nick

Photographed in Nashville, TN

Raised in:
Hendersonville, Tennessee

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite thing about the south:
Southern music – the unique traditions of southern music that proliferate worldwide – such as all the different brands of country in Nashville, rockabilly country, country swing, blues tradition in the Delta, and the jazz and jazz funk scene in New Orleans, particular to Frenchman’s Street. These musical traditions are unique to the southern US and influence musicians and musical culture worldwide.

Now would ya look at that:
Meet Nick, half of Brier & Moss, a bow tie company launching mid to late Fall. Nick and his fraternity brother Jonathan are creating a line of high quality collegiate bows and are “working hard to ensure that our first production run will be up to the high standards of gentlemen everywhere.” The bows are designed with official school colors, stripe prep patterns, and 100% silk. The first line is for fans of Samford (worn by Nick), Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. It was such a pleasure to chat over coffee with Nick in Nashville last week, to hear the dreams of a company who is getting very close to launching, and to jot down phrases like “bow tie wearers are a certain breed. They want to set themselves apart.” Add the Brier & Moss blog to your readers to stay up to date!

Volunteer Traditions Giveaway!

September 29, 2011

My friend Mason (who was blogged yesterday, below, see for yourself) founded Volunteer Traditions in 2005. He and his tailgating friends, fed up that South Carolina seemed to have their half moon and palmetto everywhere, decided to make belts with the Tennessee flag on it. People loved the quality products of their state, and Mason expanded the brand to include additional products and states, focusing on making apparel people can wear proudly, wherever they go. From bow ties to dog collars, Volunteer Traditions products do live up to the standards customers have for their state.

I’ve had the pleasure to work with Volunteer Traditions on some shoots, which you can see here, here, and here! And now, I’m teaming up again with Mason, but this time you’re involved. Enter for your chance to win one of the Heritage Line caps (pictured below are just a few from the collection). Here is what you need to do to be entered:

  • Head over to Volunteer Traditions and shop for your favorite hat.
  • Leave a comment on this post with your name, email, and which hat you’d like to win.
  • LIKE Back Down South on Facebook!
  • LIKE Volunteer Traditions on Facebook!

The winner will be picked at random on Thursday, October 6. Good luck!

Congratulations to Josh Flynn for winning the Old Gray South Tennessee hat. Thanks to everyone who entered!
