Drink This – FEW Bourbon Whiskey

December 4, 2015

MII_3844

The Drink: I’ve now tried all of FEW Spirits products and can say with confidence that these guys know what they’re doing. Last year, we featured this Illinois distillery’s Rye Whiskey. This summer, their Gin was my go to for G&Ts and martinis. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been grabbing their Bourbon Whiskey the most for my evening cocktail. It’s really a little glass of Christmas, with a strong cinnamon, clove and spice smell and taste. The spice (or maybe it’s the 93 proof) hits like their Rye, but with a touch a malt for smoothness. Grab a bottle for some delicious December drinking – on sale on Caskers!

The Other Stuff:

  • Adele’s 25 vinyl.
  • Stainless Steel Whiskey Cubes. I prefer these over stones. They may not look as cool, but they’ll make your whiskey much colder for much longer.

Drink This – Cruzan Estate Dark Rum

December 2, 2015

MII_3850-2

Rum drinks are typically the last that I order unless I’m on a beach. Every now and then – in the dead of summer – I’ll whip up a mojito, classic daiquiri or Mai Tai. This summer, I explored sipping rums in the Bahamas, easing my way into it with Rum Old Fashioned’s. I’m confident that, until yesterday, the last one I made in July was the last sip of rum I’ve had this year.

Candice (pictured here) came over yesterday after a shoot and went straight to our beer fridge. She came back, to my surprise, with ginger beer. “I want a Dark and Stormy,” she said, with the confidence of a girl who knows what she likes to drink – a favorite quality of mine. I remembered a bottle of Cruzan Estate Diamond Dark Rum that I had and requested we use it instead of a cheaper option (I typically only make Dark and Stormy’s with Goslings Black Seal). The Single Barrel is not what you’d mix with anything, really. It’s perfect for sipping with delicious hints of oak and vanilla. But, I figured we should give it a try.

We splashed a little Reed’s Ginger Brew over a large cube into my favorite vintage glass and topped it with the Cruzan. In our opinion, it blended perfectly as more of a Rum-on-a-Rock-with-a-Splash-of-Ginger Beer cocktail. I put a separate splash in an empty glass and sipped it neat, shocked that I was doing so on December 1st and enjoying every bit of it in our flannels. Take that, winter.

Music Monday – Go Christmas

November 30, 2015

christmascardfinal2011 Christmas card. 2015 coming soon…

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, then Merry Music Monday is no new thing to you. You’ve maybe noticed we’ve pulled back on our Music Monday posts in an effort to provide all original content on every topic we discuss. Because of that, I’ve been Tweeting (most days) a Song of the Day to hold over those of you who love the songs posted here. I’ll continue to do this through Christmas, sharing only Christmas songs – new and old favorites. But for those of you who Spotify and maybe enjoyed Merry Music Mondays, here’s my Go Christmas playlist. 185 songs and counting. Ho ho ho!

Draper James

November 12, 2015

IMG_0899

Hey, y’all. Caroline here (per usual). As you possibly have noticed on this blog, I don’t often nor very much like to post photos of myself (unless, of course, I’m on an inflatable swan or something). I started Back Down South to show off other people because the whole “lifestyle blogger” thing just isn’t me. I’m a pretty simple dresser. I’m currently wearing grey wool socks, grey sweatpants, and a grey sweatshirt that says “Red Hair Don’t Care” – a gift from non other than Jamie Clayton. I’ll give myself a little credit – I am getting in bed soon. However, shouldn’t a “blogger” be in, oh I don’t know, like, flawlessly pressed $200 pajamas? Not me. However, if someone wants to give me $200 pajamas, I will accept.

So, when Draper James asked me if I’d like to pick out an outfit and answer a few questions for their new Stylemaker Seven feature, I was pumped. If you’ve been living under a rock somewhere in a Pacific Northwest forest, Draper James is Reese Witherspoon’s Southern-inspired fashion line. Since I knew she wouldn’t approve of a single element of my current outfit, I graciously took the opportunity to don myself in three great pieces from their current collection. I put on my big girl boots (they’re Luccese) and asked my friend Anna to let me be awkward in front of the camera for a few minutes.

Head over to the Draper James blog to read the feature and see my “Seven Southern essentials.” A huge, huge thank you to them for making me feel really special and gifting me three of my new favorite pieces. Ladies, if you’re on the hunt for a new pair of denim (aren’t we always?), their Tootsie jeans are perfect!

Music Monday – MIGHTY

November 8, 2015

mighty. 009Photographed in Nashville, TN

Meet Angelo Fiaretti, the brainchild of MIGHTY. Produced by Dan Gleason of Grouplove, Fiaretti’s garage rock with grunge influence manages to be both reminiscent of early ’90s Cobain yet refreshing at the same time. Chalk it up to the self discovery lyrics (with a little paranoia and drugs) from a high school dropout. Who needs it anyway? The five tracks on his first EP Bye, Have Nice! were recorded entirely in Angelo’s kitchen taking garage rock up a level to kitchen rock. It’s exactly that kind of raw badassery that makes me love this EP.

Thanks to Angelo for answering a few questions for us (and you). All photos were taken in Nashville at the Nisolo showroom. The live shots were taken during his performance of “Back Porch Gin” for The Love List Presents.

Born and raised in:

Saxonburg, Pennsylvania – right outside of Pittsburgh.

Why “MIGHTY” – tell people a little of the story behind this project:
After I started some project with some friends we happened upon a sound and way of writing that was new to me personally. After those friends were out I still had a love for what we did. I just want to keep expanding on those initial feelings.

Describe the EP in 5 words or less:
Big old box of lead.

mighty. 006

Your most played song (or album) these days:
I’ve been loving the FIDLAR self-titled record.

Favorite concert you’ve ever been to:
Foxy Shazam/Circa Survive at Mr. Smells in Pittsburgh. I just broke up with a girl who was going to go with me, so I ended up taking my best friend, which was a way better choice. That show brought me so much joy. It was like if I saw Billy Graham speak in his prime days of preaching. I just remember Foxy blowing my mind and changing the way I looked at performing.
