Cheers from Houston!

December 20, 2019

Testing, testing. Anyone reading this? It may be the most overdue post in history, but here we are.

It’s been three years since I’ve created content for Back Down South. After moving to Houston it became apparent that if I continued with the format, this would become a Texas blog. And, though I love Texas dearly, I know the majority of my readers were spread all over the Southeast and would likely not find interest in a Texas – particularly Houston – focus. My hope was to always represent as many cities as I could, which was a blast when we were traveling around the Southeast on the regular.

It’s also obvious that Back Down South became very cocktail heavy towards the end. Which again, I clearly love, but didn’t feel like I wanted this to become solely that. So, I just took an indefinite break. I refused to force content for content’s sake, and as the break went on, it was pretty evident to me that it was time to move on.

I’m really proud of the work made here and so thankful for all of the connections it brought to us both personally and professionally. I literally made life long friends thanks to this platform and was able to launch an editorial career because of it, which in the beginning felt like a pipe dream of goal. I plan to keep this website active for two reasons. One, like I said, I’m proud of it and all the folks we celebrated here, and I want that to continue to exist. And two, well…you never know. I may come back?

The Family Story of Pappy Van Winkle (and Co)

June 1, 2017

That one time Jess Graves and I were hosted by the Van Winkle clan in Louisville…

This is throwback to one of my favorite adventures and stories that I photographed for The Love List. For some silly reason, I never shared the images here. This was a glorious day, and these are a few of my favorite photos from it. Make sure to read the full story if this is your first time seeing it.

HTX!

Texas, it’s time. WE’RE MOVING HOME!

Our time in Georgia has given us a lifetime of joyful memories. Truly, it’s been the best. I’m confident that we will always look back and tell stories of days and nights with friends we wouldn’t have without this place, as some of the greatest of our lives. And at the same time, we’re so grateful that we’ll be welcomed in Houston with hugs in October from some of our best friends and family. Bittersweet, all around.

Moving is a big deal for a lot of people. First, they have to find the perfect house from a site like williampitt.com and then they have to pack up and move. People worry over things like missing their friends or going to an area that they don’t quite know. And yes it is scary, but also it’s so worth it. Unfortunately for some, they aren’t able to move until their home is sold, that’s what happened with some family members in California, they couldn’t get out and start their new life! They told us afterward that they should have done a trade-in with Reali so they could have moved A LOT sooner, oh well, we all learn as we grow! Luckily for us, we didn’t come across that problem.

I think it is the thought of the moving process that affects people the most – instead of the actual move. That’s why to make our transition from Georgia to Houston as smooth as possible, we’re going to take the time to make sure that everything that needs doing has been thought about in advance so that we are prepared. Even what some people might consider being small, like using companies similar to https://www.carsrelo.com/ to help transport our car is something that we are going to think about carefully, as we want this move to go off without a hitch. We wanted to make sure our new home would be comfortable and ready for when we arrived so that we could immediately get settled. This included looking through things like Stream Energy plans and HVAC systems, all that stuff you need to think about when you move to a new home. Anything to distract us from everything that we’ll be leaving behind will help us to move successfully.

We love all the new memories and friends that we made in Georgia, we’re so grateful to everyone! But now it’s time for us to move.

Jasper, despite it’s small town quirks and frustrations, has been the happiest home for us. SharpTop Cove has been a dream come true for Mark and a place of immense goodness for me. Atlanta has been our getaway and we’ll deeply miss the city and the people who’ve made it so rich. The Southeast, all around, has changed us in so many ways. In our time having Georgia as home base, we’ve traveled near and far to taste and see what it has to offer. Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Johnson City, Charleston, Savannah, Birmingham, Athens, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Charlotte, Charlottesville, D.C…to name a few. We are forever better for the cities and people we got to meet and enjoy and learn and stretch and grow. Eat, Drink and Be Merry – we’ve lived that out big time.

There’s a lot of mystery, a lot of tears, and a lot of adventure ahead. But y’all, we won’t lie: we’re real giddy to call HTX home and see where this next chapter takes us! I will still be doing photography and continuing Back Down South. Sure, it’ll become a little Texan heavy, but it’ll still hold true to what it’s been.

I know we have a lot of Houston readers, and I’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment, shoot an email, and follow the excitement on Instagram. We’d love your recommendations of spots to check out, people who should be featured, cocktails that need to be tried – all of it. Don’t be a stranger, please!

Texas Forever.

Derby Weekend

May 15, 2016

What a weekend in Louisville! It was most of our first visits to the city, other than Will (leading us around in the first photo below) who was raised there. His family welcomed our group in and treated us like royalty. We arrived on Thursday night and played tourists until Saturday when we crushed Kentucky Derby 142. It was everything we dreamed of and more. Here are some highlights from our epic and unforgettable weekend with some of the best people in the world.

First stop, Butchertown Grocery for cocktails. Recommended: Between a Pawn and a Chapel – their twist on an Old Fashioned, and the Heart Attack & Vine – their twist on a Negroni. Three words to sell you on that one…bacon-washed Campari. I regret not ordering three.derby02CAR02879

Will has made me an “Old Fo” fan because of his love for it. I had to snap him in front of this painted wall we walked past on our way to dinner at Mussel & Burger.CAR02849

Surprise “Swag Bags” gifted to us by Will’s mom. Mini Woodford Reserve bottles and bourbon balls, pristine Kentucky Derby 142 glasses, Weisenberger’s cornbread mix, Bauer’s Modjeskas, and the cutest Mint Julep recipe towels. Mom goals!CAR02936derby05CAR02963

See You Out There

MII_2845-2The Huckberry x Howler Snapback, available in our Huckberry shop!

MII_2857-2

After two months of back to back weddings, it’s break time. This means local adventures together, mostly to our front porch and down to the creek by our house with our pup and cold beers. But adventures always pop up – close and far – and we’re excited to see what fills our empty calendar this month. Got any ideas for us in Georgia?

See you y’all out there.

Back Down South Shop

May 26, 2015

IMG_2755-2-2Photographed in Eureka Springs, AR
Hudson Sutler Oahu Commuter Duffel
(on sale for $85)

We’ve been Hudson Sutler fans since the minute we discovered them. And as you’ve seen here before, we’ve also been Huckberry fans since the minute we discovered them.

I recently chatted with Grant Hewitt, the man beehind Hudson Sutler, and we thought it would be fun to collaborate with a little travel series this summer on Back Down South. Mark and I use their bags on the regular, and I’m traveling quite a bit this summer around the South and beyond. I wanted to photograph their Weekender duffels taking trips with me. This idea grew into one of my favorite oppurtunites I’ve had to date: curating a shop on Huckberry.

Over the next few months, I’ll be adding products to the shop (stay tuned on Instagram, FB, Twitter), as well as photographing some of my favorite ones that go on the trips with me. The shop is filled with items that I think are perfect for summer travels and adventures, so click the image below to check it out and do some shopping!

Special thanks to Hudson Sutler and Huckberry for providing some products for us to use on our travels.

ATL to NOLA to TX

May 20, 2015

A few weeks ago my best friend Tig said “goodbye” to Atlanta and packed her bags for Texas. Though I hate to see her leave Georgia, I can’t be upset about someone moving back to the Homeland. I jumped at the oppurtunity to road trip with her to Houston and as we planned the drive she casually mentioned that she’d never been to New Orleans before. In my opinion, a night is all you need, so we made a stop. Road trips are a wonderful way to see things you might not normally encounter. However, if you want your road trip to be a success, then you need to make sure that your car is up to the job. An old colleague of mine recently found some great Salina used cars online at conklincars.com if you are considering upgrading your own car. It’s important to have a reliable vehicle to go on a road trip. You don’t want to break down in an unfamiliar area! If you need to purchase a new vehicle for the road trip, make sure that you’ve added this vehicle to your insurance policy. Of course, if you wanted to find the cheapest insurance for your car trip, you could always consider looking online. That should save you some money whilst you’re traveling. For more cost-cutting ideas, it might be worth reading this article here. Hopefully, that will help more people to have more money for traveling. Road trips can be expensive, so it might be worth trying out some of those ideas. For now though, here are some highlights from our trip.

IMG_2155 We went straight from the highway to Erin Rose Bar for beers and – well – killer po’ boys!

IMG_2161IMG_2159IMG_2165IMG_2331IMG_2178IMG_2184IMG_2185IMG_2232The Carousel Bar in Hotel Monteleone was a must for me. Sure, touristy, but it’s an institution. I had to have a Vieux Carré in the bar where it was created. For me, it was a bit like checking off “Champagne at The Plaza.”

IMG_2238IMG_2241 We picked Kingfish for dinner and were so happy we did (thanks to Patrick King for recommending it via Twitter). We had an epic 4 hour meal and savoured every bite and sip. Add this place to your NOLA list.

IMG_2243IMG_2338 Onward to Texas! While on the road (and before refueling our bellies at The Chimes in Baton Rouge), one of us mentioned how we wished we’d have time that weekend to go to an Astros game. A few minutes later, Tig’s brother texted her “‘game tonight, roof open, 70 degrees.” Could we get there in time? We sure could. What better way to welcome Tig back to Houston than driving straight to the ballpark for some ‘Stros, overpriced beers and nachos in the Crawford Boxes.

IMG_2340IMG_2346IMG_2349 Texas forever.

Special thanks to Sam Hunt for providing our soundtrack for 90% of the drive.
Thanks to the Undisclosed Podcast for filling the other 10%.

Masters Sunday

April 12, 2015

Happy Masters Sunday! To celebrate this glorious afternoon in golf, I dug up some photos from our first (and only) visit to Augusta National back in 2011. I sure wish I was walking barefoot on the softest grass in the world drinking a cheap beer right about now…

Charleston Getaway

March 6, 2015

On the first weekend of February, Mark and I headed to Charleston for a quick winter getaway. We arrived before dinner on Friday night and left early Sunday morning, making it our quickest trip there to date. Regardless, we enjoyed every minute, as one tends to do in the Holy City.

We stayed at the beautiful Belmond Charleston Place in one of their newly renovated rooms. We didn’t leave the place the night we got there. We spent a few hours at The Thoroughbread Club followed by one of the best food experiences of our lives at the Charleston Grill. Whiskey, champagne, wine, crab cakes, beef tartar, scallops, and lamb racks with a live jazz soundtrack. It’s no wonder this place is recognized as one of the best restaurants in the nation.

charleston 019On Saturday, we did what any normal person visiting Charleston does: ate, and then passed the time until we could eat again. We started with cappuccinos at the newly opened Saint Alban, then walked next door to Leon’s for one of the best fried chicken sandwiches we’ve ever had.

charleston 005

storyboard001We then drove around the neighborhoods, got some sun on our faces, then headed up to The Citadel so House of Cards obsessed Mark could see the campus for the first time. When we arrived we stumbled upon a UNC vs Citadel Rugby match and enjoyed the free entertainment (Citadel won).

charleston 017Our last meal was at Edmund’s Oast, recommended by the wonderful Mickey Baskt, manager of Charleston Grill. This place was fantastic! Cured charcuterie, braised lamb meatballs (our favorite item of the night), bacon egg & cheeseburger, all paired with in house IPA’s for Mark and awesome cocktails for me. We rolled out of there fully satisfied and quick to recommend it and return.
