Christmas Down South – Day 6 – The Old Try

December 15, 2012

Today, we want to give you something to decorate your ho-ho-homes. The Old Try is one of our favorite companies we’ve come across…ever. We talk about them often and proudly hang their work from our own walls. Multiple walls. Starting in May 2011, Micah was homesick and heartbroken after seeing Alabama beat up after the tornadoes. That, mixed with a good bit of Willie Morris, made him want to do something to show that just because he’d moved away from the South, didn’t mean he didn’t think about her. “These are my love letters chronicling our long distance relationship.”

Pick a print, any print, and leave a comment letting us know which one you want. A winner will be chosen at random on December 21st!

Frame not included. Ask Santa for that.

Christmas Down South – Day 5 – Dogwood Black

December 14, 2012

Every time a bow tie is tied, an angel gets its wings. So today, we bow tie. Dogwood Black, formerly known as Southern Ties, went live on November 1st. Still calling Fredericksburg, Virginia home, their biggest change was to become a greater reflection of who they are. “We don’t really take ourselves too seriously, but we still demand excellence and want to build something more meaningful than a larger bottom line. We wanted every facet to reflect our beliefs and while we’re not quite where we want to be yet, we think we’re on the right path.” In addition to bows, they’ve also added shirting as a response to issues they personally had with quality and price.

Want to win this box of bows? Leave a comment on this post letting us know your favorite Christmas movie. The winner, who will be chosen at random on December 21st, will get the Camo, Candy Cane, and Tartan bow ties.

Christmas Down South – Day 3 – Hudson Sutler

December 12, 2012

When I opened my package from Hudson Sutler (c/o), I talked to myself quite a bit. Wow, Damn, That’s so cool, and Oh my gosh were all coming out of my mouth. Just me and my bag, in my kitchen, having a little love affair with my St. Simons duffel from the Hudson Sutler X WM Lamb & Son Collection. These are Made in USA goodness with ridiculous attention to detail. Grant Hewit, who started the company a year ago, shares some inspirations: “Guess who got a great bag from his father, only to have the zipper rust and leave it green? Hence the rust proof resin zippers. We hated fumbling around our bags looking for keys…insert zippered side pockets. We use 18oz canvas because our duffels are meant to be lived in. Beat ’em up, get ’em dirty, wash ’em and do it all over again. The patina will tell a story.” Add the various linings, which add personality and a pop of color, and we’re done for.

Sure, they’re based in the busy streets of New York City, but they fit right in down south. “We like to think our bags are a reminder of why we all rush around. Life’s about what you care about, and we hope our bags get you back to those passions.”

Want to have a love affair with a Hudson Sutler bag, too? Leave a comment on this post letting us know which commuter duffel you’d like to take on an adventure. A winner will be chosen at random on December 19th!

Christmas Down South – Day 1 – Ledbury

December 10, 2012

It’s time for SEVEN DAYS OF GIVEAWAYS! Seven! We’re kicking off our fun old fashion family Christmas by heading out into the country in the old front-wheel drive sleigh to embrace the frosty majesty of the winter landscape and select that most important of Christmas symbols…a Ledbury shirt. Paul Trible and Paul Watson started the company from a refurbished tobacco warehouse in Richmond, Virginia in December 2009. The two graduated with Oxford MBAs at the height of the financial crisis, turning them from finance to fine fabrics which gave them to the opportunity to work on a real passion. Ledbury is dedicated to quality and fit. “Our shirts will look better, feel better and last longer than anything else in your closet.” For Christmas dinner, a Ledbury man will hunt, clean, and cook the Christmas turkey himself – all with unflinching poise, perfect execution and remaining well dressed the entire time. True story.

Want one? It’s this simple: leave a comment on this post with what shirt you’d like to win. A winner will be chosen at random and announced on December 17th!

Hunter

December 5, 2012

Photographed in Nashville, TN

Meet Hunter, the man behind The Hood Shop and Prinstant Replays.
Now, get your learn on…and enter to win some goodies.

Raised/lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite thing about Nashville:
It’s impossible not to say the people. With family in town, friends from pre-school, awesome people that I don’t know how I met, and lots of incredible new people to Nashville, the community here is second to none. There’s also a lot of creative innovation going on. People are doing things differently, and I dig that.

What inspired The Hood Shop:
I needed Christmas gifts last year and had seen these typography maps for other cities, so I made some and gave them to friends. With a nice response, I added a paypal purchase button on my blog, and guaranteed delivery by Christmas. This led to my fantastic mother and I delivering prints in tubes all over the city on Christmas eve. Since then, it’s grown to a full online shop with products available at two wonderful local shops.

What inspired Prinstant Replays:
The feeling you get when your team makes “that play” that will be remembered forever. For instance, when I busted through my friend’s dad’s screen door, removed my shirt and spun it over my head like a helicopter running through the neighborhood after Kevin Dyson took it to the house on the Bills. Rather than a video of your favorite play, I wanted to capture that moment in a design. I felt like it would be the perfect man-gift.

…which is your favorite Prinstant Replay:
The Beast Quake. That name is incredible. And that run is even better. The Seahawks color scheme is one of my favorites in sports as well.

Now would ya look at that:

  • Gap oxford shirt.
  • Casio watch.
  • Imogene + Willie Barton Rigid jeans.
  • Timberland Earthkeepers boots.

BONUS:
Hunter wants to give away some prints! Leave a comment on this post telling us which Hood Shop or Prinstant Replay print you want. FIVE winners will be chosen at random and announced on Saturday, December 8th.

DOUBLE BONUS:
Use code BACKDOWNSOUTH for 15% off all orders at The Hood Shop. The discount is good through the end of the year!
