Larry, Part V

July 19, 2016

Photographed in Atlanta, GA

This is Larry’s fifth appearance (see previous) because we’re such a fans of what he’s doing with Cause a Scene. Currently on tour, I caught up with him briefly in Atlanta at Ponce City Market where their show was held at Citizen Supply.

Tell everyone about the Cause a Scene Tour:
The tour stretches over two months and 35+ shows in cities from coast to coast. It features two Salt Lake City-based singer-songwriters, Joshua James and Timmy The Teeth. It’s our first ever tour and in a sense is our attempt to plant seeds in various cities to see if the CAS concept can take root and consistently bring intimate pop-up concerts and events to those cities.

Highlight so far:
Each city brings its own level of excitement as we get to see old friends, meet new people, go to cities we’ve never been to before.

City you’re most excited to get to:
I’m really looking forward to Fayetteville (tonight) as they have such a cool downtown area that I’ve been looking forward to get back to since I first visited for a wedding last year.

Now would ya look at that:

  • Cause a Scene shirt.
  • J.Crew jeans.
  • Nisolo oxford shoes.

P.S. The August West Coast tour dates (including you, Texas!) were announced today.

Biggest music guilty pleasure right now:
Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest record. It’s a brilliant, catchy pop album and a great follow-up to the ubiquitous “Call Me, Maybe.”

Best live performance you saw in 2013:
Mumford & Sons in Birmingham, Alabama at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre on September 9th. Ben Lovett from the band invited me to come down for the show and I was able to watch it from back stage the whole night and hang out with the band until the early hours of the next day. It wasn’t just the best show of 2013, it was the best of my life and one I will never be able to forget.

Now would ya look at that:
This photo was previously featured in Nashville Lifestyle’s MVP’s of the Music Industry, a collection of “business savvy all-stars who are propelling the Nashville music industry forward.” Larry deserves every bit of the love and recognition he’s received for launching Cause a Scene Music!

Last band you saw live:
I see quite a few shows (10 last week alone), but a few have really caught my attention: Sir Sly, based out of Los Angeles has a sound in the realm of Foster the People, Imagine Dragons and Alt-J. They put on one of the best shows I’ve seen in the last year. I think they’re poised to breakout in 2013. Pickwick, from Seattle, was much the same way, with a Pacific Northwest take on indie soul and garage rock that makes for one gigantic party in a live setting. Can’t get enough of their debut record Can’t Talk Medicine. Charleston’s Steven Fiore played one of our house shows recently and had the whole crowd entranced with his Jason Mraz-esque vibes. He covered Jeff Buckley’s “Lover You Should’ve Come Over” better than anyone I’ve ever heard. Definitely one to watch for.

Most played country album:
This might be a cheap shot, but my most played country album of all time has to be George Strait’s 50 Number Ones. Why mess with a classic, right? Also, a few years ago my Dad passed down his record collection to me, and I am now a proud owner of Willie Nelson’s box set. It has 9 Willie records in it and is frequently played at our house!

Now would ya look at that:
Cody is a familiar face here because we think has he killer style and is an all around great guy. He also happens to be a great photographer, and we’re excited to announce that he’ll now be a contributing photographer for Back Down South!

  • Imogene + Willie hat and jeans.
  • J.Crew chambray shirt.
  • Casio dive watch.
  • Clark’s desert boots.
  • LongBoard Larry skateboard, custom designed by Jamie.

Music Monday – Harts

July 15, 2013

When you describe someone to me as “the next Prince,” I’m going to listen to him immediately.

This is exactly what happened when Cause a Scene‘s Larry told me about Harts.

And then I freaked out.

And I turned it up.

And then some more.

I keep dancing through the night on my own in my home in the candlelight…

In his own words: “The music is indie rock. But it is also electro dance. And funk. It’s an indie creation. With shredding guitar solos, over synth pads and pounding electro drums, topped with surreal melodies and edgy vocals, the blend of musicianship, style and experimentation has really transcended anything that I could hope to map out on a piece of paper of musical influences. The music is its own thing.”

Yup. It’s all of that, and it’s so good.

02 Back To the Shore

His 5-track EP, Offtime, was released in March and mixed by Lars Stalfors of The Mars Volta, an insanely energetic progressive rock band that I jammed a lot in college. Worlds collide.

Now, listen to the full EP. Happy dancing, y’all.

Music Monday – James Bay

June 10, 2013

Photographed by Alex Shahmiri

On Wednesday, I got this text from my friend Larry: You need to check out James Bay, esp his song “Move Together.” James Vincent McMorrow meets John Mayer.

So Thursday morning, I sat down with my cup of coffee, and routinely started some searches for new sounds to get my day going. James Bay was first, and I didn’t get any further than that for about an hour.

“Move Together” on repeat, with breaks to scour YouTube in search of performances of other songs (like this one).

Larry never leads me astray, and he has a way of describing musicians sounds perfectly. James Vincent meets John Mayer? Nailed it. But also so much more, with his own uniqueness and way of making you want more. He’s from the UK, of course, Hitchin to be exact. Oh, and he’s 22.

Stream: “Move Together”

Move Together

This single precedes his debut EP release, The Dark and the Morning, coming July 22nd.

Download “Move Together” for free on his website or Soundcloud.

Favorite music spot in Nashville:
The Ryman. There’s just nothing else like a show at the Mother Church. The acoustics, the atmosphere, the history – everything is perfect about it. I’ve been to about twenty five shows there and I count many of them among the best I’ve ever seen.

Now would ya look at that:
Meet Larry, the man behind Cause a Scene Music, officially started earlier this year. The series features many local and national touring acts. “I’m a huge fan of the community that is fostered through having a band play in the house and the fellowship between guests who are from very different social circles.” Larry has hosted ten shows through May with ten more booked between now and August. Follow the blog and Facebook if you’re interested in catching a great house show in Nashville.

  • J. Crew gingham shirt and vintage slim jeans.
