Music Monday – Harts

July 15, 2013

When you describe someone to me as “the next Prince,” I’m going to listen to him immediately.

This is exactly what happened when Cause a Scene‘s Larry told me about Harts.

And then I freaked out.

And I turned it up.

And then some more.

I keep dancing through the night on my own in my home in the candlelight…

In his own words: “The music is indie rock. But it is also electro dance. And funk. It’s an indie creation. With shredding guitar solos, over synth pads and pounding electro drums, topped with surreal melodies and edgy vocals, the blend of musicianship, style and experimentation has really transcended anything that I could hope to map out on a piece of paper of musical influences. The music is its own thing.”

Yup. It’s all of that, and it’s so good.

Stream: “Back to the Shore”

02 Back To the Shore

His 5-track EP, Offtime, was released in March and mixed by Lars Stalfors of The Mars Volta, an insanely energetic progressive rock band that I jammed a lot in college. Worlds collide.

Now, listen to the full EP. Happy dancing, y’all.

Suitsupply – Austin

What mistake you see most men make concerning fit:
The mistake I see men make most is buying their suits too big. The first thing we look for at Suitsupply is if the jacket fits in the shoulders. If the jacket fits in the shoulders, then nine times out of ten a good tailor can alter the rest of the garment to fit everywhere else. If it looks a little big in the shoulders, then we suggest trying one size down. The trousers should also be worn on the “natural waist” and men should always keep in mind that a trouser can be altered through the waist, seat, and leg to ensure a perfect fit.

Now would ya look at that:

Wearing all Suitsupply…

  • Plain blue Washington suit.
  • Cardigan.
  • Mini houndstooth shirt.
  • Bordeaux tie.

Birmingham

June 25, 2013

We went to Birmingham a few weeks ago for the first time. As some of you may have seen, we were honored to be part of a #Rav4Inspired* road trip. We’ve all been on many road trips before so we knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into. Hannah has even road tripped around the whole of the US! We knew how to plan the route, find state farm reviews for the insurance, and book all our hotels. But, we wanted to spice it up a bit so we decided that where we stayed, ate, and drank would all be recommended by you – the readers. So thanks to Twitter, Facebook, and comments on this here blog, we began a list. An unachievable list of recommendations to be able to conquer in less than 2 full days.

So, we booked a room at Aloft, invited our friends Kristen and Tyler, and picked up our sexy 2013 Rav4. The short trip ended up being over a rainy couple of days, but luckily, the four of us like beer. A lot. So our Birmingham adventure turned a bit into a brewery tour, and we didn’t complain about it one bit. Now, onto the photos (and a few short videos) of our adventure!

We were already on the road when I received this Tweet from Antoine, a reader turned friend: Be sure to try a locally brewed @Back40tweets Ale. At that point, I’d yet to hear about Back 40 Beer from anyone, so I did a quick search and saw it was in Gadsden, a town we were going to drive through in 30 minutes. It closed in 40…so we quickly made way. Brewery stops on a road trip are only one of the greatest things.

We made it to Birmingham, checked into Aloft, and enjoyed dinner at Chez Fonfon. After, we went to Dram Whiskey Bar, a place we’d definitely visit again.

We spent our rainy Friday early afternoon antiquing (Hanna’s being our favorite and most successful spot). What we did Friday morning you’ll have to wait to see – it involved a lot of photo taking to launch a new series that’s coming soon.

Really, we were passing time until 3:00 rolled around – when the breweries opened. First up, Good People.

Next, Avondale, where we didn’t expect to spend almost the remainder of our day and night.

Frizzy hair don’t care.

Saw’s Soul Kitchen…YES. PLEASE! We walked down and got dinner to go, and took it right back to Avondale.

We were spent. On our drive back to the hotel we saw Cahaba, a brewery only one person recommended, but was on my list. “Let’s rally!!” And so we did.

On Saturday morning, we said goodbye to Birmingham over a delicious breakfast at Over Easy and a quick city view from The Vulcan. One day, we’ll go back to hang out with the ghosts at Sloss Furnaces.

Thanks, Birmingham, for a great time. We’d totally come back.
Thanks, Rav4, for being a fun car to road trip in. We’d totally drive you again.

*Full Disclosure: Southeast Toyota Distributors provided us with use of an all-new 2013 RAV4, and a gas card, for our trip to Birmingham. We received no other compensation from Toyota. The opinions I have shared about this vehicle are on my own.

P.S. We do not think irresponsible drinking is cool, especially when driving is involved. For that reason, I (Caroline) was the DD for the later half of the day and night.

Like a Truck,Truck

June 25, 2013

Photographed in Andrews, NC

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite bar in Charleston:
That’s incredibly tough. Most likely Closed For Business. It’s owned by the same great people that own Taco Boy, Poe’s, and The Royal American. It has an incredible beer selection, great food, atmosphere, and amazing bathroom wallpaper (you’ll have to visit to see it). Poe’s on Sullivan’s Island also could be the best place to get a beer in Charleston. I like going to the beach at Sullivan’s late in the afternoon for a few hours (lets be honest, I’m not going to get a tan) and then walking to get beers at Poe’s on their front porch.

Now would ya look at that:
After we shot a wedding in Andrews together, this happened.

  • Electric ‘Knoxville’ sunglasses.
  • J.Crew blazer, tie clip, and Bowery oxford cloth pants.
  • Express 1MX shirt.
  • Nautica tie.
  • Dinner napkin from a previous wedding he shot as a pocket square.
  • Nisolo belt.
  • Cole Haan ‘Air Colton’ wingtips.
  • Brooklyn Brewery Summer Ale.

Favorite BBQ spot in Georgia:
As a reformed Southerner, I have grown addicted to soul food and barbecue. As of late, I have been on the hunt for Georgia’s best. So far, I have yet to see anything beat Dawg Gone Good BBQ in Athens, but Fox Brothers is next to be tested.

Now would ya look at that:
Previous Morgan appearances: Date Night, Ups, Holiday Party.

  • J.Crew henley.
  • Levi’s 511 white jeans.
  • Zara double monks.

Make sure to check out some photos I shot for Starboard Clothing Co with Morgan sporting the bows, and his wife, Candice, being his arm candy.

Candice

June 20, 2013

Photographed in Roswell, GA

Raised in:
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Lives in:
Athens, Georgia

Favorite thing about Athens in the summer:
First of all, in Athens, only the true townies stay for the summer while all the college kids are gone, so that already makes Athens heavenly. But one of my favorite events is Athfest, this huge music street festival that goes on for days. It’s such a big city feel with amazing music from all varieties of bands paired with incredible food and libations. Basically, just a good time.

Now would ya look at that:
Before dinner at Roswell’s new restaurant,  Opulent.
Previous Candice appearances: Date Night, Holiday Party.

  • Target sunglasses.
  • Gap top.
  • LOFT belt.
  • Skirt found at Community, a vintage boutique in Athens.

What you miss most about living “below the line”:
In general, I miss the country. I miss nature and constantly being a short car ride to hiking, camping, or swimming. Specific to Nashville, I miss the music scene so much. I miss live old country and bluegrass.

Now would ya look at that:
Alex Crawford is the Head Photographer, Art Director and a Co-Owner at TSBMen.com. I’m a huge TSB Men fan, so a while back when they tweeted that Alex was in Nashville, I reached out to see if Jamie could shoot him. Everyone obliged and made it happen.

  • Indochino linen blend suit and fan patterned shirt.
  • Vintage tie and pocket square.
  • Hand-me-down crocodile belt and croc shoes from his father.
  • Bourbon.

Music Monday – James Bay

June 10, 2013

Photographed by Alex Shahmiri

On Wednesday, I got this text from my friend Larry: You need to check out James Bay, esp his song “Move Together.” James Vincent McMorrow meets John Mayer.

So Thursday morning, I sat down with my cup of coffee, and routinely started some searches for new sounds to get my day going. James Bay was first, and I didn’t get any further than that for about an hour.

“Move Together” on repeat, with breaks to scour YouTube in search of performances of other songs (like this one).

Larry never leads me astray, and he has a way of describing musicians sounds perfectly. James Vincent meets John Mayer? Nailed it. But also so much more, with his own uniqueness and way of making you want more. He’s from the UK, of course, Hitchin to be exact. Oh, and he’s 22.

Stream: “Move Together”

Move Together

This single precedes his debut EP release, The Dark and the Morning, coming July 22nd.

Download “Move Together” for free on his website or Soundcloud.
