Drink This – The Keelhauler

May 13, 2014

Keelhauler

The Drink: I reached out to Julian Goglia of The Pinewood in search for a good Rum Punch recipe. He kindly shared this one and declared it ‘The Keelhauler.’ It’s awesome! My only adjustment to Julian’s recipe was using 2 oz of rum as opposed to 1.5 oz. Personally, I like a drink a tad boozier, and the addition of more rum made it a tad less sweet, which I also prefer. If you love a sweeter cocktail, try it with 1.5 oz first.

  • 2 oz aged rum – we used Flor de Caña’s 7 year reserve
  • 1/2 oz John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum*
  • 1/2 oz ginger syrup (1 part ginger juice to 1 part sugar)
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice

Shake and strain into glass over a large cube.

For an actual punch, you’ll need to add 1/2 oz water per serving. So if you want 20 drinks, multiply all the ingredients by 20, including the water. Get it nice and cold in the fridge and pour into a punch bowl or pitcher.

*Don’t worry, I also had to Google what the heck Velvet Falernum was (here’s a great explanation). If you’re in Atlanta, I grabbed a bottle at Tower for $17.

The Glass: Hand-blown DOF glass from One King’s Lane.

The Attire: Dress from El Mercado in San Antonio’s Market Square.

Take Me To Louisiana

May 8, 2014

For as long as I can remember, my [Mark’s] family has gotten together in my parents hometown of Rayne, Louisiana for an Easter crawfish boil. I don’t know when the tradition started but it is understood that regardless of if everyone can make it, there will be 200 lbs of locally grown crawfish waiting for us at my Pappy’s camp to end the Lenten season. It started with immediate family but as the kids have grown up and gotten married it has grown to include friends, extended family, and in-laws. I have been absent for more Christmas mornings with my family than crawfish boils. Caroline and I make the 10 hour drive for 36 hours of gluttony and laughter every year and don’t anticipate ever stopping.

One of our favorite road trip stops – The Abita Brew Pub for a beer and a po’ boy. If you’ve never visited Abita Springs we highly recommend it. Make sure to save time (and eat before you go) to make a visit to the Abita Brewery Tasting Room. It’s free, you pour your own glasses, and it’s unlimited. Pretty much the best tasting room ever.

Dessert stop in Baton Rouge for a plate of beignet fingers at Coffee Call. If you’ve been to Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, never go back. Coffee Call puts the New Orleans tourist trap to shame.

The Camp – Mark’s grandfathers 40 acre property. The camp was built out of the old Lafayette Parish Court House that was located in down town Lafayette. Pappy and one of his brother-in-laws purchased all the wood when the court house was being torn down. They built the camp on weekends and holidays until it was finished in 1959. Some minor improvements have been made over the years to keep it maintained.

The green walls in the kitchen were originally mahogany from the courthouse judges paneling.

The utensils are from Mark’s great-great Grandparents house. The pictures in the camp were given by different people. The picture just above the banner is one Mark’s aunt made when she was young. “Saw someone do it so I tried. Pappy liked it so he hung there because really, Granny didn’t want it in her house.”

The Coonass sticker was given to Pappy by a friend. Granny hated it but couldn’t keep Pappy from putting it up because “The Camp is Pappy’s house.”

Pappy started the bottle collection years ago. His friends and family know he collects so they pick up bottles for him.

“The Camp” isn’t located in a town. It’s in Lafayette Parish, and the nearest town is Indian Bayou, about 4 miles away (population: about 30).

The 200 lbs of crawfish comes from Mark’s great uncle’s (Uncle Keke) crawfish farm a few miles down the road, where Granny grew up.

Music Monday – Penny and Sparrow, Part III

April 28, 2014

0000879300122Photographed by Jamie Clayton

Here’s the deal – this is the third time I’ve shared Penny and Sparrow, so if you haven’t listened to them yet then I’m extremely dissapointed. Or you may be a new reader, in which case I forgive you.

Their debut album Tenboom (listen) was my favorite record of 2013. Before finishing my first listen to their sophmore release Struggle Pretty, I knew that they very well may take repeat gold this year. It has such depth, honesty, and raw beauty that I can hardly handle it. Truthfully, I can’t. I’ve yet to make it through “A Literal Heart” without tears making an appearance. Struggle Pretty an amazing step forward from Tenboom. As does all the art they’ve previously created, it’ll knock you down. However, this album surprises you with upbeat moments that’ll pick you back up and dust you off (case and point: “Reeth” followed by “Thunder”).

All I can really say, as I’ve repeadly said, is prepare your hearts. Seriously.

Stream: “Bread and Bleeding”
Bread and Bleeding

Their making rounds through the South in May and I strongly urge you to hear these men live. It’s unforgettable.

For now, GO BUY STRUGGLE PRETTY ON ITUNES!

Hummingbird Factory

How Hummingbird Factory got started:
After college and design school, I found myself working for a menswear manufacturer in Knoxville, itching to start making clothes and accessories myself. While designing and producing a line of skirts, I quickly became disenchanted with most of the fabrics and prints that were available to me, that reflected someone else’s personality and voice. I wanted my designs to be me through and through, and printing fabric myself seemed the best place to start. So I made my husband figure out how to screenprint and then teach me. Our first design was a Sweet Knox market bag that sold out at our local farmers’ market.

What you’d like everyone to know about your products:
Nearly all of the fabrics I use are reclaimed from vintage linens to beyond-repair clothing, ripped apart, printed and stitched back up in the Hummingbird Factory into small, useful little items. I want each piece to be a bright spot in your day, kind of like a real hummingbird. I have a ridiculous amount of fun rifling through vintage textiles, thinking about what design might work, trying out different ink colors, or settling on a lining with some unexpected contrast.

Your inspiration:
It would be silly to say that anything pretty inspires me, but it’s true – Mexican tiles, Indian block prints, all gorgeous. But there is another source of inspiration that seems to be the blank canvas for everything else – a county fair.

In late summer, my husband and I frequent these and they’re filled with things I love to look at – dusty mules in all their leather and silver finery, plain block typefaces on feedsacks and lard bins, bright red tractors, speckled hens. In between bites of funnel cake, I take dozens and dozens of photos to capture the earnestness of these things, their utility and their simplicity – that’s what I’m after.

Now would ya look at that:
Meet Ashley Moore, founder of Hummingbird Factory, based out of Nashville.

  • Monogrammed pewter cuff, gifted from her mom.
