Favorite southern meal:
Nothing quite beats our crop of summertime fruits and vegetables in the South. So this time of year, my favorite meal is a quintessential southern picnic – peaches, tomato pie, fresh okra, silver queen cream corn and chicken salad sandwich. Toss in a chocolate pecan pie and I’m done for!

Now would ya look at that:

  • H&M’s Conscious Collection top. “I believe in championing apparel companies that utilize sustainable materials and empower their employees by providing fair trade working environments. A tough task, but H&M continues to pioneer the movement for fast-fashion brands.”
  • H&M necklace.
  • bySMITH shorts (designer Smith Sinrod is a Southern girl herself).
  • Bracelet – a vintage belt.
  • Belt – Gucci replica. “I love this fabric belt. It is actually very similar to a Gucci design that I saw in the Gucci store a few months ago. If you would like to find a belt like this one, you might want to check out some of the amazing replica designs out there online. This fake Gucci belt guide by Maria Dipalo might also come in handy. Belts are such a fun way to accessorize your outfits but you should not have pay too much for one if you are on a budget! I love wearing belts and have quite a few in my collection.”
  • Ring – “When I graduated high school, Mama had the diamond earrings Dad gave her on her first Mother’s Day set into a ring for me. I’ve worn it every day since.”
  • Essie Mint Candy Apple nail polish.

Red Meets Blue

 Photographed in Nashville, TN

Raised in:
Houston, Texas

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite southern word:
“Y’all” because it is such a natural part of speech in the South. I try not to use “y’all” in emails for work (in attempt to be more professional), but nothing else seems to sound right.

Now would ya look at that:
You’ve seen Kimber on here twice before (here and here).

  • J.Crew shirt.
  • American Apparel belt.
  • Nixon watch.
  • Bracelet found at Serendipity (12th South in Nashville).
  • Her mother’s ring, worn every day since she was 16. Her mom received it as a high school graduation gift from her parents.
  • Anthropologie skirt.
  • Steve Madden flats.

Music Monday – War Jacket

May 21, 2012

Photographed by Stephen DeVries

My introduction to Caleb Chancey, performing as War Jacket, was this simple performance of “Box of Wine.” What is there not to like about it? I downloaded Leaflet No.1 on NoiseTrade for free and was hooked. It’s safe to say Alabama is producing some seriously excellent musicians.

Van

May 11, 2012

Photographed in Washington, D.C.

Raised in:
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Lives in:
Washinton, D.C.

Favorite getaway below the Line:
Palm Beach, Florida. My parents are snowbirds and have made PB their wintertime nest – and since it’s such a quick trip from DC, I visit as often as possible. I love Dixie Highway antique stores, egg BLTs from Green’s Pharmacy, Worth Avenue’s famous shopping, bike rides along the Lake Trail, and grilled artichokes at the Palm Beach Grill. It’s definitely the land of Lilly and Stubbs, so it’s fun to really go wild with bold colors and prints.

Now would ya look at that:
Van of Necessary & Proper. Together, he and Lauren run one of my favorite style blogs.

  • Rugby RL jacket.
  • Ralph Lauren tie, belt, and shoes.
  • Brooks Brothers pants (ankle length).
  • Tiffany & Co engine-turned belt buckle.
  • Burberry umbrella.

What brought you down south:
After eighteen years in the exact same place, I decided to pack my bags and head south to Nashville for college. Everyone told me it would be “different” from the north, but at that age, I could not conceptualize north/south cultural differences. I was shell-shocked initially but now I love the south (and country music). I think about my favorite places in Nashville all too often – Calypso Cafe (oh those Boija muffins), Mambu, Printer’s Alley, and Demonbreun Street. I can’t wait to go back for homecoming this fall! I’ve been settled in Washington, D.C. since finishing up at Vanderbilt.

Now would ya look at that:
Lauren is half of Necessary and Proper, a style blog based in D.C. Come back tomorrow to meet Van, the other half.

  • Sequin necklace.
  • ASOS dress.
  • Tory Burch bag.
  • Loeffler Randall heels.

Harding-Lane

May 8, 2012

Harding-Lane Lobster Needlepoint Hat (c/o)
Photographed in Charleston, SC

The idea for Harding-Lane needlepoint hats came to Sarah and Steve Gifford in the summer of ’09. “We both thought that it would be great to go into business together, and we thought that needlepoint would look really cool on a hat.” Sarah, having experience in needlepointing since high school, began creating the hats with their love of New England and respect for the environment. Last year, the hats were brought to market, and the brother and sister team were proud to call their products “the original needlepoint hat.” With washed tones, land and sea icons, and a sailcloth strap, the duo from Boston are offering a hat that will make for good looks below the line…on one of you!

To enter, leave a comment with your name, email and which hat you’d like to win (pick here).
To receive additional entries, ‘Like’ and ‘Tweet’ below (+1 entry for each action). The winner will be picked via random.org on Tuesday, May 15th.

Tweet this: I just entered to win the original needlepoint hat by @hardinglane on @backdownsouth! Go me!

Music Monday – Sanders Bohlke

May 7, 2012

Photographed by Seth Newell

Sanders came up during my lunch with Micah a few months back. He raved about the guy, and I was intrigued for a few reasons: one, Micah has great taste, and two: Sanders is my maiden name and will likely be the name of one of our future children. I liked the guy before hearing a song.

…and then, I heard a song…and I loved the guy. The more I heard, the more I loved, and the quicker he raced up the my singer/songwriter ladder. After a few months of listening over, and over, and over, I’m going to say this: Sanders Bohlke is hands down one of the best musicians hailing from the south.

01 Quiet Ye Voices

Stream: “Quiet Ye Voices”

______

Raised in:
Sardis, Mississippi

Lives in:
All over, I’m very Nomadic. Just moved from Birmingham and now living in Jupiter, Florida.

Favorite song about the south:
Anything from R.L. Burnside or Junior Kimbrough. That’s what I grew up listening to. When I think of the South, I think of Mississippi, and when I think of Mississippi, I think of that kind of music.

Song you are most proud of:
Search and Destroy – it was my favorite song to write, and has continued to be my favorite song to play.

Southern city you haven’t performed in but would like to:
I have two – Knoxville and Athens. I would love to play both of those places very soon.

Stream Sanders on Spotify and buy on iTunes.

Rocker

Photographed in Nashville, TN

Raised in:
Lubbock, Texas

Lives in:

Most underrated thing about Lubbock:
It has a really good music scene and great local food. Cap Rock Cafe is my favorite – huge skooner margarita, queso burger and the best French fries.

Now would ya look at that:
Remember Copeland? Meet his mom, Emily, enjoying some rocker time on a Sunday afternoon.

  • Tory Burch earrings (private sale).
  • Anthropologie sweater.
  • Michael Kors watch.
  • Gap white denim.
