Photographed in Memphis, TN by Jamie Clayton

Raised in:
Greenville, North Carolina

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite thing about Memphis:
I’ve only made my way to Memphis a few times. One of the most memorable things about Memphis is its simple authenticity. From Beale Street to The Peabody to Graceland, Memphis is never trying to be something it’s not. That said, my favorite thing about Memphis is its musical history. I love the blues and in turn rock n roll. Without the music that came (and comes) from Memphis those artists and songs that define those genres may have been completely different or may have never been at all.

Now would ya look at that:

  • Vintage sunglasses, bow tie, and belt, handed down from his father.
  • Custom blazer from Libo’s in Burlington, North Carolina.
  • Ralph Lauren shirt and seersucker pants.
  • Cole Haan loafers.

Starboard Clothing Charleston Toile Necktie (c/o)
Photographed in Athens, GA

We’re leaving the deep south for this giveaway, making way to Annapolis, Maryland to Starboard Clothing. As an anything-with-an-anchor on it obsessor, I was first drawn to them because of their logo. I was happy to discover that their ties are truly unique, donning patterns I hadn’t seen, and products that tell stories…like the one you see above.

The Charleston Toile Necktie continues to be our favorite of theirs. The inspiration for it was the concept that the pattern would be large enough look interestingly unbalanced on a bow tie, but be small enough to be able to have visible details. The same concept translated to the necktie. The other inspiration is the classic southern qualities of toile on curtains, couches and pillows. Particularly prevalent in Charleston, the city was perfect in serving as the namesake for the tie. Founder Ben Meredith adds: “Although toile is available in a number of colors, Ryan and I are both huge fans of tobacco jars with the places named on them. We let that help us choose the color combination. I actually have one just like this. This design is so classic, and that’s what we wanted the tie to be.”

Want one of these? Enter to win by leaving a comment on this post with your name, email address, and which one you’d like: BOW or NECK? A winner will be announced on Tuesday, July 24 around cocktail hour.

Favorite thing about the south:
Everything about east Tennessee including the Smoky Mountains, sweet tea, and Dolly Parton. I fell in love with the south after spending summers working at Dollywood. One of the best life lessons was learned that summer upon meeting Dolly. I told her I didn’t know how to act around her, and she said “why do we have to act? Why can’t we just be ourselves?”

Music Monday – Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors

July 2, 2012

Photographed in Nashville, TN

This post is long overdue, but when I found out that a new album was in the works, I figured I’d wait.

And it was worth it, y’all.

You’ve seen Drew and Ellie Holcomb here multiple times, and we’re blessed to call them friends with enormous talent. The photo above may look familiar, as those good looks were featured a while back (see here: Drew + Ellie). But let’s talk about their music…they’re insanely wonderful music.

I always say that a good cover is the way to my heart. Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors (Ellie, Nate, Rich, and Jon) have won my heart all over again with their new album, Through the Night – Live in the Studio, a collection of their ten favorite songs recorded in Drew’s hometown of Memphis. From Bob Dylan to U2, they kill it with their own take on the songs. It’s impossible for me to single out one song from the album as my favorite, but I’m sharing their cover of Tom Waits “Picture in a Frame” for two reasons: 1) They just released their music video for it and 2) Because Drew said this about the song:

The song we recorded, “Picture in a Frame”, is a song we have covered more than any other over the years. It speaks about love over a lifetime. In just four minutes, you get the complete story, the first look to the last look, a glimpse of the lifetime in between. It’s a novel in a few short breaths. I want to be the narrator in the song, to love someone “till the wheels come off” and my years are through.

Stream: “Picture in a Frame”

As if this post wasn’t sexy enough already, Drew & Ellie said that I can share what will go down as one my favorite covers…ever. Back when they ran a Kickstarter for Chasing Someday, there was no way we weren’t going to support the making of their new album. That album is gold. The goldest of gold, actually…and so is the cover we requested in exchange for our monies. Originally, I was going to request a Lady GaGa cover, which I know would have been out of this world, let’s be honest, but we decided to ask for something that we’d truly cherish: friends covering one of our all time favorite songs. Enjoy it below. We’re crazy about it.

9 Crimes

Stream: “9 Crimes” (Damien Rice cover)

Bonus: their albums are discounted all summer on iTunes, so buy on!

Engaged

June 26, 2012

Photographed in Atlanta, GA

Raised in:
Him: Glennville, Georgia and Shellman’s Bluff
Her: DeLand, Florida

Lives in:
Atlanta, Georgia

Favorite southern music event:
Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee.

  • Her reason why: We go every year, and camp in a tent and everything. Most people prefer summer vacations at the beach. We prefer watching amazing performances with 80,000 of our closest friends, while sweating in a tent. Best performance I’ve seen from there? It’s a tie between My Morning Jacket from 2011 or Rodrigo y Gabriela or Radiohead from this year.
  • His reason why: In the five years I’ve been beginning in 2004, I’ve witnessed some of the best performances of my life, from heavyweights like Widespread Panic to Radiohead to up-and-comers like Rodrigo y Gabriella. However, the most vivid memories each year are from the festival-goers themselves.

Now would ya look at that:
Meet Travis and Sudie, getting married in December in Shellman’s Bluff! We spent a day frolicking around Atlanta last week and made some fun photos (see here).

On Her: J. Crew from head to toe, with the exception of her watch (Guess), a present from Travis.

On Him: Land’s End Canvas OCBD and shorts; Timex Andros watch with NATO strap courtesy of J. Parker Ltd. in Savannah; favorite pair of beat-up Topsiders.
