Headless

June 13, 2014

JayLindsey-014Photographed in Atlanta, GA

Raised in:
Him: Alpharetta, Georgia
Her:
Powder Springs, Georgia

Lives in:
Atlanta, Georgia

Favorite Atlanta date spot:
Him: JCT.  It’s got everything you need – great atmosphere, a patio bar upstairs, supper downstairs, and we can walk home…
Her: Alfredo’s on Cheshire Bridge. The place is like a time capsule into early ’80s Italian-American nostalgia, complete with endless framed Godfather-esque headshots and various imperial bottles of house reds in the corner of each booth. The Veal Picata is perfect. It’s cheesy, but still romantic. We go once a month.

Now would ya look at that:
More photos of these two coming next week.

On Him…

  • Zegna TwentyFourSeven blazer.
  • Ledbury dress shirt.
  • Incotex trousers. “No break + 2″ cuff = perfect.”
  • Ralph Lauren engraved buckle and belt.
  • Allen Edmonds black shell cordovan tassel loafers.

On Her…

  • Dolce Vita dress and Diane Von Furstenberg heels.

Drink This – TX Blended Whiskey

June 12, 2014

IMG_3195Photographed in Burnet, TX

A few weeks ago while visiting my parents new home in Burnet, I wandered into Twin Liquors in search of a Texas whiskey to try. The few I have experienced have all been fantastic, and up to that point, I merely chose by judging the bottle. It’d proven successful thus far, so I did the same with this one I’d yet to see. With the giant TX label, how could I resist? To top it off (pun intended), each bottle cap is handmade, mostly from repurposed cowboy boots. Learn more about the bottle cap stories here, it’s pretty dang cool.

That evening, we popped open the TX Blended Whiskey and sipped it neat and man, oh man, did we fall in love with it. The strong vanilla scent, the caramel and honey buttery flavor. We nearly drank the entire bottle on that first night, and fought over the last drop on my last night.

A few days later, my Mom texted me a photo of her holding two giant bottles that she’d be driving back to Montana. I just about cried over it.

I’m mixing up this “Drink This” feature with an interview. Rob Arnold, Head Distiller at Firestone & Robertson Distillery, was kind enough to answer a few questions. Keep up the incredible work, Rob!

What inspired TX Blended Whiskey:
There are many blended whiskies on the market, but premium blends tend to come from Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and other regions aside from the United States. We wanted to create a premium American blended whiskey that could stand up against the great blends of the world. We need the right equipment to do this, so checking out some Kentucky whiskey barrels for sale as well as other barrels is important for us to make the whiskey that we want to put out there.

Favorite tasting note in TX Blended Whiskey:
The fruity notes that come through upon the addition of a small amount of water.

How you’d describe it in 5 words or less:
Viscous, slightly sweet, tropical fruits.

Favorite song that mentions “whiskey”:
The Pogues – “Streams of Whiskey”

______

If you’re in Texas or Louisiana, find out where to buy this delicious whiskey. For those who live beyond, write it down on your “whiskey’s to try list” and get it if you’re in the area. Prayers for greater distrubution would also be appreciated.

Pop a Top

BottleOpener Everything This Land has on their site is just plain cool. Dedicated to telling artists stories, the array of products is a collection of classic pieces made with two hands. When I spent some time on the phone with founder Dan McCready, his passion for craftspeople and high quality was contagious. He kindly offered to send us one of the products that displays these things perfectly, and we gladly accepted. Created by renowned blacksmith Stephen Yusko, this Forged Steel Bottle Opener puts all other bottle openers to shame. After a year years of forging each bottle opener individually, he now has them cast in steel from an original forging of his. “This gaurentees that each opener has the precise angles needed to open a bottle perfectly every time. Once back from the foundry, I forge the handles, file, sand, bead-blast and finish each opener. After a final wax coating, they’re ready to be put to work…if you consider opening a bottle to be work!”

No doubt about it, this is a classic piece created by one of America’s finest blacksmiths. Get one here.

  • Steamhorse Dry Goods ‘Everyday T-Shirt’ (c/o)
  • Three Taverns Single Intent Belgian-Style Single beer.

Why you started Onward Reserve:
We wanted to provide one destination where all of our favorite brands could be shopped. We also wanted to provide a clean and convenient online destination to shop these brands. We have always had an interest in the stories behind the brands and we are thrilled to be our customers trusted advisor as we curate gifts and apparel for the Onward Reserve lifestyle.

Favorite thing about the Atlanta shop:
We were able to use some brick that was re-claimed from an old Neel Reid building in downtown Atlanta to line the walls. This brings in some local history and also helps to bring character to our newest retail home.

What’s next for the company:
We are excited to be opening in Charlotte, North Carolina in June. We are already under construction and will be open by the end of June.

Now would ya look at that:
Meet TJ Callaway, Co-Founder + CEO of Onward Reserve.

  • “My favorite Onward Reserve brand shirt from this Spring.”
  • “The coolest thing about my outfit is the new Shinola Watches that we just picked up. They are all handmade in Detroit.”
  • Martin Dingman ‘Julian’ alligator belt.
  • 7 for All Mankind jeans.
  • Martin Dingman ‘Pierson’ penny loafers.
  • Not pictured – Peter Millar Summer Comfort Boxers.

Austin, Part II

Favorite southern designer:
Sid Mashburn. To me, Sid brings out the best of both worlds in design – Southern and Italian. Everything he designs is really classic and effortless. He has everything from the basics to Italian made suits, both of which you can wear today and ten years down the road and it will still be relevant. Another reason he’s my favorite southern designer is because he also pulls a lot of his style from Gianni Angelli, who is a personal style icon for me along with his grandson Lapo Elkann.

Now would ya look at that:

  • Vans for J.Crew.
