Photographed in Atlanta, GA

Raised in:
Sardis, Mississippi

Lives in:
Jupiter, Florida

Favorite spot in Georgia:
I have several favorite spots (Atlanta, Athens, Savannah), but one stands out. There’s a little town in North Georgia that my buddies and I escape to every Labor Day weekend called Blairsville. We stay in a cabin overlooking the mountains and it’s really peaceful.

Now would ya look at that:
Only Sanders Bolkhe could pull off camo cargo pants for me.

  • Warby Parker sunglasses.
  • J. Crew shirt.
  • Pants found Salvation Army in Palm Beach, Florida.
  • Sperry Top-Sider’s.

Nisolo

October 16, 2012

Zoe, Patrick, Nick
Photographed in Nashville, TN

Raised in:
Zoe: Santa Barbara, CA
Patrick: New Orleans, LA, and Hot Springs, AR
Nick: Austin, TX

Live in:
Nashville, TN

When did Nisolo begin:
Patrick: I began developing what would become Nisolo in November of 2010 while he was working in microfinance with Peru Mission. In June of 2011, Nisolo became a full-time gig for the founders for the first time. The official launch of the company and first stateside sales event was held on October 6, 2011.

Describe Nisolo’s mission:
Patrick: Nisolo is a socially conscious brand dedicated to offering a unique product that fuses quality and fashion with a vision to spur sustainable development throughout impoverished regions of the world. A Nisolo purchase is both a stylish indulgence and an investment in the future of the impoverished artisan who crafted it. Supporting Nisolo allows consumers to directly facilitate one of the most powerful forms of poverty alleviation in the developing world: job creation. By offering a hand up and out of poverty rather than a handout, Nisolo’s goal is to empower impoverished artisans with the ability to shape their future through their extraordinary work.

What sets Nisolo Shoes apart:
Zoe: One thing that sets Nisolo’s product line apart from other brands on the market is the chic, classic design of each shoe. The attentiveness to detail evident in the shoemaking process of Nisolos is only heightened by the fact that each pair is viewed by the artisans as a unique piece of art. As a company, Nisolo is set apart in comparison with other similar brands by the superior quality and design of our products and the sustainability of our cause.

How did the three of y’all end up together:
Patrick and Nick  were connected because they both spent a year in Trujillo, Peru working with Sinergia, the micro finance organization started by Peru Mission. Nick was down there in 2009-2010 and Patrick worked down there in 2010-2011. Through this, the two became acquainted—although they didn’t actually meet in person until about 6 months into working together on the Nisolo project. Patrick and Zoe were introduced by a mutual friend who Patrick knew from Ole Miss and Zoe knew from working in corporate fashion in New York. Around 6 months into the development of Nisolo, Zoe flew down to Trujillo to meet Patrick and all of the shoemakers he had been working with. She fell in love with the vision for Nisolo and soon after quit her job and moved to Peru to work full time with Nisolo.

What brought you to Nashville:
Nick: We see a great opportunity to make a lasting footprint, specifically in the South. As opposed to other hotspots for social enterprise such as the West coast, Austin, or New York, we see the South as an untapped market that hasn’t been legitimately exposed to conscious consumerism and the idea of empowerment through helping the poor help themselves. We want to help change that. As the movement of social enterprise continues to grow in the South, and specifically in Nashville, we want to grow and lead that movement in this region.

Favorite Nisolo shoe:
Nick: Moreno Loafer in Driftwood
Patrick: Emilio Chukka in Oak
Zoe: Oliver Oxford in Toffee

What makes Nisolo’s accessories so awesome:
Zoe: They are simple yet classic and are a great compliment to many different outfits. They are also another subtle reminder of the talent that exists among the Nisolo artisans.

Now, tell us about the Southern Roots Tour:
Nick: We want to present the thought of conscious consumerism to people throughout the South that haven’t had much exposure to a social enterprise like Nisolo. As the movement grows, we are traveling around the South in order to make a footprint in Southern cities and let them know about Nisolo. Our schedule can be found on our events page.

We’ll be spending our Thursday evening at Big Studio in Atlanta browsing their pretty shoes in a night of refreshments, community and compassion. Swing by one of their events when they roll through your town. Until then, get your shop on. We love this company!

Football Friday | Razorback

October 12, 2012

Arkansas Alum

Raised in:
Waco, Texas

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

Favorite Arkansas tradition:
My favorite part of game days during undergrad was walking from the Pi Phi house with friends down Maple Street all the way to the stadium, and seeing all the tailgaters along the way and hearing almost a continual calling of the hogs as we went. The feeling of Fayetteville in the fall on game day is unlike anyplace or anything else. I also love the official “calling the hogs” in the stadium right before the game begins when the players run out – everyone is woo pig sooie-ing their hearts out, and there’s all the hope in the world that we’ll win the game! Although it didn’t take place in Fayetteville because it was Thanksgiving break, one of my favorite moments of being an Arkansas fan was during my junior year, when we beat LSU (in Baton Rouge, no less!) in triple overtime. I was watching from the living room with my dad at home in Texas, and I don’t know if we’d ever cheered that much at the TV before! Still makes me happy to think about it! Go hogs!

Now would ya look at that:

  • SEE Eyewear glasses.
  • H&M blazer.
  • The red v-neck and the red scarf have both been in Razorback-game day-attire circulation since college.
  • Imogene + Willie jeans.
  • Clarks boots.

JNG, Part III

October 9, 2012

Photographed in Atlanta, GA

Raised in:
Born in Ft. Worth, raised on the state line of Georgia/Florida.

Lives in:
Atlanta, Georgia

(Current) favorite band from the south:
The South is really a hotbed of great music… even more so lately than in past years. Athens is killing it right now: Futurebirds and The Whigs always put on a great show, and Reptar are upbeat and danceable in that guilty pleasure sorta way.  I saw Nashville’s Jeff the Brotherhood at the Gentlemen of the Road stopover in Bristol – those dudes are so rock n’ roll. If we’re counting Texas and Florida as the South (I’m going to) – Surfer Blood out of Palm Beach County are so chill but still complex, and I don’t really see myself ever getting sick of going to Ghostland Observatory (out of Austin) shows. Of course, Alabama Shakes – I saw them at Bonnaroo and they’re on the verge of something huge. And as far as Atlanta goes? I can’t even talk about Outkast deciding to not move forward with new music. To me, they’re the Alpha and the Omega. Not gonna lie though, I can get into some Usher.

Now would ya look at that:
You should recognize by now that this is our girl Jess from The Love List!

  • Theysken’s Theory blazer.
  • T by Alexander Wang tee.
  • Levi’s jorts.
  • Phillipe Matignon tights. “I swear by these.”
  • Tory Burch bag.
  • Boots bought in Austin, TX at a no-name boot shop. “I have worn the label out, so I have no idea who they’re by, just that I like ’em.”

Music Monday – JOHNNYSWIM

October 8, 2012

Photographed by Breezy Baldwin

Last week, while Mark was at Catalyst, I got this text from him: Look up Johnnyswim. Musicians. Pretty sweet. From Nashville. I was enjoying a PSL at Starbucks like the rest of ‘Merica, working on my laptop, and did so immediately. The only thing Mark got wrong about them was that they aren’t pretty sweet – they’re really sweet.

The married duo have just got it. Abner was trained at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida and Amanda…well, Amanda spent her summers touring the world as a backup singer for her mother, The Queen of Disco…Donna Summer.

As their album played, and I let Mark know that yes, he’d recommended something great, I fell hard for their velvet voices and well crafted lyrics – perfectly displayed in the final track of their EP, “Annie.” Then there’s the title track “Home,” digging into the popular trend of songs about home right now with an upbeat sound, insanely complimenting harmonies, and their simple but heart striking words: “Oh, I love me some home.”

The icing on the cake for me was the story behind their band name. I’m a sucker for a fun band name and have a few of my own written down. I know the origins of 6 bands names that are inspiring as well as so many more. A band name truly represents the band, so of course, there’s usually a cool story behind it. You know, just in case. Amanda said in an interview with Global Grind that JOHNNYSWIM is “about a guy named Johnny on the movie Jaws. He was trying to get away from Jaws on his raft and his friend yelled from the dock ‘Swim Johnny, Swim!'” Amazing.

Stream: “Heart Beats”

01 Heart Beats

Be excited – you can download Home, Vol.1 for free on their website.

Bonus: they perform new material (and covers!) on their New Music Mondays installment over at their YouTube channel.

Favorite gameday memory in Chubbies:
When I led the Fighting Tigers out of the tunnel in Death Valley, ahead of the Mad Hatter, grabbed some endzone grass to chew along the way, and slapped Mike the Tiger on the ass as I ran past his cage. He gave me a wink and a roar.

Now would ya look at that:
The ‘Walk of Fames’ Chubbies (c/o) lookin’ hotter than the Honey Badger did last season.

  • Ralph Lauren OCBD.

Wake Forest Alum

Raised in:
San Antonio, Texas

Lives in:
Nashville, Tennessee

What took you from Texas to North Carolina to Nashville:
I visited my sister’s best friends at Wake Forest on my college tour and loved the campus and everyone I met. I had never experienced real seasons before and loved the welcoming Southern culture. After college I knew I didn’t want to stay in Winston-Salem and I wasn’t quite ready to head back to Texas, so I moved to Nashville. It’s a direct flight back to San Antonio, it has seasons, there is always something fun going on, and one time Garth Brooks played nine shows in a row.

Now would ya look at that:

  • Modcloth Amber Champion dress.
  • Necklace + earrings: Gifts from my family for high school graduation. “They sure came in handy – I quickly learned that at Wake Forest, girls wear pearls. All day every day.”
  • Essie Smokin’ Hot nail polish.
  • Jack Rogers sandals.

Speakeasy

September 25, 2012

I haven’t owned a bottle of perfume since middle school. I’m not anti-perfume, I just stopped asking for bottles of Abercrombie 8 in my stocking, and I never looked back.

Until now.

The Dallas based, UGA grads of EastWest Bottlers, responsible for Moonshine, have put out their second fragrance, Speakeasy. With no experience picking out scents from a bottle, let the gentlemen describe it for you: an intoxicating aroma with notes of pink peppercorn, white moss, sapphire gin (favorite part!), patchouli, and savory nutmeg. Yes, please! When I received my beautiful bottle in it’s wooden box, I awkwardly sprayed it on my wrist (this is how you test it, right?) and sniffed. I’m officially into perfume again.

Guess what, ladies? These gents want you to have a bottle, too! TO ENTER: leave whatever comment your heart desires on this post including your name and email. A winner will be announced on Saturday, September 29.

DOUBLE YOUR ENTRY BY TWEETING: Repeal your prohibitions! Win Speakeasy perfume by @EWBottlers on @backdownsouth. http://tinyurl.com/speakeasyforme

Additional high fives for liking:
